Feather Hair Extensions

There is a new battle brewing, this time it’s not over oil, but bird feathers.
This battle seems to have stemmed from a new hair style called “feather hair extensions” and the anglers are up in arms.  Apparently this new hair style, starting in Boulder Colorado, has spread to the rest of the country.
With this new trend there is talk in the fly fishing community, of a feather shortage and huge price increases for this once sacred bird feather.
These cherished feathers have been primarily produced and supplied by Whiting Company in Delta Colorado. Through cross breeding and years of perfecting, Whiting has produced the best dry-fly hackle in the world.
These hackles are now sought after and being bought up by the beauty industry.
The poor birds.  What is one to do to stem the tide of this dilemma, the fighting over and stock piling of feathers.
The answer is simple if you think about it.
Girls and (guys), if you get new feathers for your hair, save the old ones and recycle them.
The fly shops can sell them at a discount to some of their anglers.  They may even be willing to buy them back, when they discover that the “hair feathers” are catching more fish.

Nail Care

Attention nail care customer:

For your safety please use this information as a guideline to determine whether your salon is providing not only great nails, but a safe and pleasant experience as well.

Are the salon and individual workstations clean?

Does your nail technician observe proper sanitation practices?

Before the nail technician begins your service, you should both wash your hands.  The towel at the table should be clean, and all instruments to be used in the service should have been disinfected.  Don’t be afraid to ask your nail technician how the instruments have been disinfected.

What is included in the price of the service?  Many salons provide all inclusive service prices;  some salons charge a la carte. Be sure you understand exactly what services are performed for the price.  For example, is polish extra?  Is top coat or fast-dry extra?  Will you be charged for broken nails?  Did the nail technician explain the service to you, ask you questions about your needs, and inform you of proper home care?  There have been so many advancements in artificial nail products that nail   technicians can make the most natural-looking nails in the world, but artificial nails aren’t for everyone.  Your nail technician should ask you about your needs and explain the at home maintenance you should do to care for your nails.  You should also share pertinent medical information with her (certain medications, for example, can hinder the application of certain nail products).  Does the salon have a strong odor?  There is an odor associated with some artificial nail products, but there is no danger to customers smelling it during their service.  However, an overpowering odor can be an  indication of an inadequate ventilation system in the salon.  Ask your nail technician or the salon owner what is done in the salon to minimize exposure to odors, vapors, and filing dust for  customer comfort.

Does the technician use an electric file?  Electric files are commonly used in the nail industry, and, when used properly, are perfectly safe.  You should not feel any pain or burning when the electric file is being used; if you experience any discomfort, tell your nail technician immediately.  The only time an electric file should be used on the natural nail is with a buffer (no grit).  Is the nail technician and the salon licensed?  All states except Connecticut require licenses for nail technicians, and most states require that the license be displayed for customers to see.

What products are used in the salon?  Most salons use products that are for professionals only, and your nail technician should be able to explain what products she uses and why. There have been great advances in nail chemistry in the last 10 years, but some salons still use chemicals whose use in nail care is not recommended, specifically a product called methyl methacrylate (MMA).

What if you have a problem with your nails?  Good communication between the nail professional and customer is essential, so if you are not happy with your service or your nails, talk to your technician or the salon owner about it.

Operation Christmas Child, a project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse, headed by Franklin Graham, is the world’s largest Christmas project. Since 1993, the project has hand-delivered more than 77 million shoe box gifts to needy children in more than 130 countries.

For more information on how to participate in Operation Christmas Child, call (800) 353-5949 or visit http://www.samaritanspurse.org. National Collection Week for gift-filled shoe boxes is Nov. 15-22; however, shoe box gifts are collected all year at the Samaritan’s Purse headquarters in Boone, N.C.

I think this is a great program and opportunity to help bring a smile to an orphans face that may not have ever know the joy of receiving a gift for Christmas. A photo of the giver is encouraged but not required. This will put a face to the gift when opened.

Lets start collecting gifts for children gang, to put in shoe boxes.

Search for a new hair stylist

The Art of Hair design

In the search for a new hair stylist, don’t be afraid to ask a stranger, “who does your hair”, when you see the a hair style and cut you like.

There has been so many articles written about finding a beauty salon and more importantly a hair stylist.

The common theme that runs through these articles over and over is consultation.  Unfortunately many of these articles have left out, what the consultation should entail.

First step would be to set an appointment to see the salon and meet the stylist.

Does the salon where the stylist work, feel comfortable to me? Is it clean and do I feel welcome?

O.K. you ask, what should we talk about during this consultation and what should I look for?  Just as importantly, what should the stylist be looking for and talking to you about during this meeting?

Remember it is, about you.

What does this stylist have to offer me that is unique and different?

How much experience does the stylist have working with my type of hair.

How committed is the stylist to the art of hair design?  Is this a part-time thing or is there an ongoing passion to learn more about their art?

*If the passion to learn more is not there, it will show in ones work.

A stylist must keep up with the fashion trends and cutting techniques and be able to offer you new ideas for you to consider.

Communication is vital in a Beauty Salon

Does the stylist truly listen to your needs?  This may seem a given during a consultation, but if an open dialog is not there, about you and your needs, and only about how wonderful the stylist is, this is not a good sign of a helpful communication, now or later.

Some of the key questions that a stylist should ask are;

What kind of life style do you lead?

This is helpful in determining a hair style,  that is right for that life style.

Remember, each client has a uniqueness in both personality and Body shape, primarily head shape to consider when it comes to hair styling. Your attributes are a very important part of the discussion and recommendations given based on these attributes.

The recommendation along with an explanation about why a particular style  would be right for you.

Do you have any movement restrictions in your arms or hands?

This may seem out of line during this consultation, but this is important information about your ability to keep up a particular hair style or cut. There again it is about you.

Remember, from an economical stand point, a really professional hair cut and hair style which is tailored to you, will last a longer time between cuts and styles when done properly.

So go out there and explore your options, find a stylist that is willing to work with you and your needs.
